Can I get my hair thinned but keep most of my natural volume?

I'm getting my hair cut soon and I want it to look like this:

Only problem is that my hair is EXTREMELY thick, poofy, and curly! I want to get my hair thinned just a bit to make it more manageable. If I end up getting it thinned and it looks nice, I'll consider side bangs as well.
